Beck Center for the Arts
In Collaboration with The Musical Theater Project and Kent State

Music by Richard Rodgers
Lyrics by Lorenz Hart
Book by Rodgers & Hart
Adapted by John Guare

Show Description:
Here it is: the original “Hey-let’s-us-kids-put-on-a-show!” musical—and eventually, of course, their show turns out to be a humdinger. Rodgers & Hart wrote this Broadway classic during the Great Depression; the parents are down-and-out vaudevillians, and if money can’t be raised in two weeks, the teenagers will be sent to a work farm. The 1937 score features more hits than any other Rodgers & Hart musical: for starters, “Where or When,” “The Lady Is a Tramp” and “My Funny Valentine.” It’s a spirited romp—but even more, these kids are marching their way to adulthood.
